3 Keys to Optimal Mental Health All Year Long

By Genevieve Cunningham

It seems as though mental health has taken a much deserved turn in the front seat over the past few years. While there is still a big push for improving physical health, the advice for protecting mental health has grown exponentially. Finally, more people are taking mental wellness seriously. But even with the extra attention, there are still plenty of bumps along the ride. Mental health can be tricky, especially if you don’t know how to care for yourself at home and work toward prevention. If you need help keeping your mental health in check all year long, take a look at these important tips.

Continual Self Care

It seems as though we all make self care a priority … but only at certain times of the year. Near the holidays, we think about it. At the beginning of a school year, we preach self care. But how many of us actually do things that promote self care all year long? Not many. In order to promote good mental health, it’s imperative to make self-care a constant. Make time for yourself on a regular basis, and your mental state will be far better off.

Self-Checks

Sometimes mental health issues creep up on us. We think we’re fine; and then suddenly we’re not. Instead of allowing this to happen, make self-checks a regular thing in your life. Once a week, ask yourself a few pointed questions: How am I feeling? Is there anything bothering me? Is there an area where I’m feeling inadequate? Am I feeling lonely, sad, or apathetic? And then answer these questions as honestly as possible. If at any point your self check isn’t what it should be, seek some help.

Long-Term Relationships

We all need relationships that stand the test of time. And luckily, these relationships aren’t necessarily romantic either. Do you have good relationships with friends? Your parents? Siblings? Everyone needs someone they can talk to, vent their frustrations with, and be 100 percent themselves around. Protecting and enhancing these relationships may prove incredibly beneficial in the quest for good mental health.

With the holidays right around the corner, there is likely to be plenty of mental health advice out there. And while this is certainly a great time to make positive changes, protecting mental wellness is important all year long! Use these tips to keep your mental health in check and to feel better and more like yourself than ever before.
