Pick Favorite Colors for Healthy Meals

By Tom Herrin

Just about everyone has a favorite color or two.  They may express their preference by wearing something on a regular basis featuring that color, or colors.  It is kind of enjoyable to see people showing those favorites.  Doing this with foods can be a good way of making meals a bit healthier.  The fact is that the greater the variety of colors people have in their meals, the healthier those meals are likely to be.  Some of this may be due simply to the fact that certain things are related to colors, and their presence in foods can mean good things.

Who Likes Blue?

Foods with the color blue, or sometimes purple, have gained a lot of respect in recent years.  At one time, it seemed as if they were rarely found on a plate.  People today may be much more aware of their benefits.  They are known for their ability to fight free radicals.  Many are believed to help combat some cancers and aging.  Those alone are pretty good incentives.  Some of these foods are blackberries, plums, eggplant, purple cabbage, figs, and quite a few more.  A lot of them now appear at lots of breakfasts as well as other times throughout the day.

What Does Yellow Mean to You?

Yellow vegetables are often associated with things that are grown in gardens at home.  While this is not their only source, many people seem to enjoy the ease of which they are grown and the sense of accomplishment that can come with the finished product.  These yellows, and oranges, have long been thought of as good for the eyes or for protecting against colds.  They also may protect the skin and heart.  Some of the common members of this group are carrots, sweet potatoes, cantaloupes, lemons, and mango, to name a few.

Make It Easy on Yourself

Why make something difficult out of something simple?  Rather than researching long and hard for ways to make those meals healthier, do it the easy way.  Just add more color to them.  While this may not do everything you want, it can go a long way toward reaching your goal.  Try to add as many colors as possible in a given meal, or try to see what you can do to include them all in one day's menu.  Either one will help you to accomplish your purpose.
