How to Beat Your Cravings for Good

Everyone has a few guilty pleasures, especially when it comes to food. Maybe you love a candy bar, or maybe you enjoy a calorie-laden frappuccino. Whatever your weakness, these little cravings can become a problem if you indulge too often. But how do we stop? When the craving hits, you just have to reach for your favorite, right? Though it can be difficult, getting these cravings under control is important for overall health. If you need help managing your cravings and getting on the right track, take a look at these helpful tips.

Get a New Favorite

This is probably easier said than done, but replacing your favorite food with something else might be a little easier than trying to do without anything at all. Love chocolate? Choose the dark variety instead. Love soda? Move to sports drinks or (even better) flavored water. Getting a new favorite can help you transition from something unhealthy to something healthy without feeling like you’re being completely deprived.

Replace With a Habit

If you don’t want to trade one food for another, you can also try using a habit instead. Every time you feel the craving for your favorite candy bar, do 10 push-ups or get a glass of water. This can take some time and self-discipline to be effective, but it can really work if you’re willing to stick with it. Just choose your habits wisely, as you don’t want to get rid of a bad craving and replace it with a bad habit. Choose a healthy or productive habit, and it will improve your life in more ways than one.

Indulge on Occasion

Don’t forget that it’s sometimes OK to indulge. Give up that fatty dish, but plan a time to eat it in the future. Maybe you avoid it for an entire month, and then make it for dessert at the month’s end. This allows you to have your cake and eat it, too … though you’ll be eating it in very small doses. Indulging from time to time can be a good thing, so give up your craving, and then enjoy it on a limited schedule.

Unhealthy cravings are hard to beat, but it’s necessary to learn that self control if you want to improve your diet and your health. Use these tips to help stop the cravings in your life. Though a few indulgences are OK, keeping the cravings under control is key to managing your nutrition. With a little help and some hard work, you can beat your cravings, improve your habits, and get in the best health of your life.
