How to Stick With a Workout Program

By Genevieve Cunningham

One of the hardest and most important parts of doing any workout program is sticking with it. Consistency and patience are key, but they're also the most difficult aspect of getting fit. We get distracted, lose motivation, or simply get bored. So how can we avoid the trap of quitting and stick with our fitness plan and goals? If you're ready to finally get fit, take a look at these tips for sticking with your program and making it through the slump.

One Day at a Time

Like anything else, sticking with a workout program is a day by day thing. Don't look at a month long program and worry about every single day right now. Worry about today. Complete today. Tomorrow, worry about tomorrow. When you think of it as only one day, it's easier to power through. Take this approach, especially in the beginning, and you may finally be able to stick with a program once and for all.

Get a Friend

It's so much easier to complete things when you have someone beside you, and a fitness program isn't any different! If you want to succeed at a new program, ask a friend to do it with you. You can laugh through the struggle together. You can keep each other motivated. You can keep each other going when you're having a bad day. Find a friend who also wants to get fit, and the entire program will be easier from the very beginning.

Put It Where You Can See It

Most workout programs come with a calendar. If yours doesn't, then print one out. Then tape it to a wall or mirror where you look often. After you complete a day, mark it off on the calendar. This gives you visual motivation. It lets you see how far you've come. It shows proof of your ability to get it done! If you've never tried this approach, try it this time around. You'll probably be surprised at what a difference a visual can really make.

Starting a new workout program is so fun in the beginning. As time goes on, we lose motivation and start to skip a day here and there. If you want to stick with it and see what kind of results you can really get, use these tips. If you can stick with it, you can get the results, improve your health, and accomplish something powerful to carry with you into the future.
