How to Beat Boredom Without Food

By Genevieve Cunningham

Boredom happens. From the time that we're small children, we begin to understand what it means to be bored. We whine and complain about having nothing to do. As we get older, we get better about the whining and complaining, but we still suffer from bouts of boredom. Luckily, boredom isn't necessarily a problem -- unless we attach a bad habit to it. And the most common way that adults deal with boredom? Mindless eating. Of course, mindless eating can lead to weight gain, higher risk of health problems, and other negative side effects. So what can we do instead of eat? If you have trouble with boredom eating, take a look at these ways to deal.

Engage in a Hobby

The best way to deal with boredom is to get involved in a hobby. You could try sewing, cross stitch, puzzles, or crafting. You can get involved in anything that's fun and interesting. When you feel boredom, reach for the hobby instead of the food, and you'll be much better off.

Build Healthy Habits

For a lot of people, the only way to beat a bad habit is to replace it with a healthy one. If you're feeling bored, don't reach for the food; reach for the weights. Or the yoga mat. Or the running shoes. Try working out during moments when you're bored. This will make it easier to beat the eating habit, and it will also help you get in better shape as well.

Read or Write

Another productive way to spend your time is to read or write instead of eat. What should you read about? Anything. Read a fiction novel, a non-fiction about an interesting topic, or use that time to read about your profession. What should you write about? Write down ideas, write in a journal, or follow a writing prompt. All of these will help beat the boredom and improve your mental strength and power as well.

Learn Something New

Why not use your down time to learn something new? It could be anything -- a new language, a new skill, or something fun. If you're learning something new, you just don't have the time to be bored. Use this to keep the bad habits away while also enhancing your mind and life with a new skill set.

Don't fall into the trap of boredom eating. It's not good for your body or overall health. Luckily, with a little planning and some determination, this is a habit that you can beat! Use these to help you nix the habit in the bud, and you'll soon be enjoying better health every day.
