How to Stay Mentally Stable in Times of Change

By Genevieve Cunningham

Change is in the air. Actually, change is always in the air, always a possibility. The only constant thing in life is that change is going to happen, like it or not. Of course, change can be difficult. We're creatures of habit, and so making changes can be a challenge. And it can be especially hard on our mental health. Luckily, there are things we can do to make change a little easier. If you're in the midst of change, or even if you just like to be prepared, take a look at these tips for keeping your sanity and your happiness even when change is happening now.

Focus on the Good

When things are changing all around you, it's normal to feel like you're in a panic. It's normal to feel out of control. When this happens, try to focus on the things in your life that are good. It's entirely possible that the change is actually a good thing. Scary, but also good. Focus on every good thing that you can possibly think of. This helps spin your perspective and put everything in a positive light. Will this take effort? Absolutely. Will it be worth it? Absolutely.

Keep as Many Habits as You Can

Another way to make change less scary is to keep as many habits as you can. If you can keep your morning habit, do it every day. If you can keep your bedtime habit, practice it regularly. The more consistency you have during a moment of change, the easier it will be to cope with the new aspect. Changing everything at once is too much. Be deliberate about keeping the habits you love, and the rest will come a little easier.

Seek Comfort

Now is a great time to seek out things that are comforting. Feeling out of sorts? Try a good movie on your comfortable couch. Try a cup of your favorite hot drink. Call your mom and talk about anything at all. Do things that comfort you. Things that make your soul feel calm. Comfort can be a really good thing while your world is changing, and it might make the difference between maintaining good mental health and allowing yourself to spiral into problems that need outside help.

Change can be scary. It can be good. It can be overwhelming. It can be a million things. But it doesn't have to be something that takes away your mental stability. It doesn't have to overwhelm your emotions. Use these tips to stay grounded and stable during times of change, and you might find that change isn't so scary and actually makes your life better in the long run.
