Foods You Should Think Twice About Eating

By Sara Butler

When it comes to nutrition, there are some foods that you can guess should be a special treat and not part of your everyday diet. For people who make nutrition their life, such as dietitians, have you ever wondered what foods they avoid at all costs. You may want to take a page out of their book and avoid these foods. Plus, here are a few foods you can use as a substitute when you're craving foods that simply aren't good for you.

Processed Meats

When it comes to processed meats such as sausage, hot dogs, and bacon, you should give them a firm pass. Highly processed meats can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease or cancer. It's a good idea to reserve them for only special occasions and not make them a staple in your diet.

If you want to partake in processed meats, then try to choose options that are a bit healthier such as chicken or turkey sausage, just make sure to look at the sodium content of what you're eating since these foods tend to be very high in salt.

Sugary Coffee

Fancy coffee drinks are OK to have every once in a while, but they definitely shouldn't be an everyday thing. One drink can add over 400 calories and over 15 teaspoons of sugar to your day. You should only have nine teaspoons of sugar per day, so that's quite a lot! If you love coffee, try to enjoy it black or with a little milk.

When it comes to sugar in your diet, you should try to limit it to naturally occurring sugar and keep added sugars out of it. Too much added sugar is harmful to your health and can increase your risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.

Margarine

Trans fat is absolutely something you shouldn't have in your diet at all. No amount of trans fat is safe. That's why you should steer clear of margarine, especially stick margarine because it's made with partially hydrogenated oils -- also known as trans fat. In this case, you should stick with good, old fashioned butter. Opt for grass-fed butter and it's even better for you, even if you should still use it sparingly. At least you won't be getting trans fat!
