Maintaining Fitness When the Weather Foils Your Plans
By Donna Stark
The weather outside isn't so frightful anymore but that doesn't mean it will always be ideal for exercise. And for many, those dreary days of transition between winter and spring may be enough of a temptation to skip their daily workouts. So what can one do to stay active during this period of time when the weather can't seem to make up its mind? Here are some suggestions from your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic.
Look for Indoor Activities
Yes, that afternoon storm may have destroyed any chance you have of enjoying your run through town but it shouldn't keep you from lacing up your shoes. There are still plenty of ways you can exercise if you take the time to find something indoors. Head to the gym and run on a treadmill, walk some laps in your local mall, or hit an indoor pool instead! You may not be able to get that runner's high you were looking forward to but you will be able to get a decent workout in!
Check the Weather Updates
By staying on top of the weather and modifying your day around any changes, you may be able to burn those calories still. Are the meteorologists calling for bad weather in the evening? Plan your workout for the morning. And if the sun is planning on coming out in an hour or two, find something else to do until then. Weather apps are a great tool to use if you are trying to schedule activities outdoors.
Dress Appropriately
If the weather isn't being agreeable but you still want to venture outdoors, make sure you are dressed for the elements. Wear layers, make sure your shoes have great traction for slippery or muddy surfaces, and protect your eyes from shooting raindrops (those direct hits can hurt!). Your outer layer should be water-proof if there is a chance of rain or a late-season snowstorm.
Adjust Your Expectations
Even if you are a fitness fanatic, flexibility is key here. There may be days when nothing goes in your favor and you have to be OK with that. Don't worry too much and give yourself some grace if you have to miss a workout. Just try to make up for it later in the week. A balanced and stress-free life is important too!
Staying Active in Spring
Bad weather doesn't mean the end of your daily fitness routine. Try to incorporate the tips above to keep yourself as active as possible during spring. And be patient! Consistently good weather is right around the corner!
