5 Common Causes of Neck Pain
By Lana Bandoim
A stiff and painful neck can be excruciating. It makes turning to see a person during a conversation impossible. It forces you to find awkward ways to look down or up at things. However, chiropractors typically see several common causes of neck pain that you need to know about.
Phone Use
How many times a day do you look down at your phone to text a friend or watch a funny cat video? Although the phone keeps you distracted and happy, it can be a common source of neck pain. Slouching and bad posture while using the phone can contribute to neck problems. Sometimes this is called tech neck because of the pain it creates.
Sleeping Position
Uncomfortable pillows and mattresses can also cause neck pain. If you sleep in an awkward way or do not have adequate support for the neck, it can cause problems. When pillows are too high or too low, this can lead to neck muscle strain. The pillow must provide firm support for the head and neck.
Sleeping on your stomach is also a problem. This can lead to more neck stress and pain. Chiropractors frequently see people with strained muscles because of how they sleep.
Injury
Whether you are injured during an accident or while playing sports, the neck pain may appear immediately. Falls and other accidents can cause neck sprains. Even swimming the front crawl stroke can hurt the neck because it requires you to turn the head side to side rapidly. Do not wait for the pain to reach unbearable levels before seeing a chiropractor.
Stress
People often complain that a difficult day at work can make the neck hurt. Stress can affect the body in multiple ways such as increasing tension in muscles. After an argument or long meeting, you may feel pain in the neck. Your emotional state can create more pain.
Osteoarthritis
Neck pain can also appear because of osteoarthritis. This medical condition causes the degeneration of joints, so aches and pain increase. Although pain is the most common symptom, you may also experience stiffness and other problems.
