Why Sun Protection Matters and How to Do It

By Genevieve Cunningham

The sun is part friend part foe. If you’ve ever listened to any advice regarding the sun, you already know the love-hate relationship that we all have with it. It’s good for us, and yet it’s dangerous. It’s hard to keep up! The truth is that the sun is to be respected, and if you don’t it will definitely show you who is boss. To develop healthy habits regarding the sun and protect your body this summer, take a look at these tips.

What Are the Dangers of the Sun?

The sun, in and of itself, isn’t necessarily dangerous. But excessive exposure can do major damage. And to make matters worse, it’s really tough to determine what excessive really is for each person. So what is the damage that can occur? On the worst end of the spectrum, too much sun can cause skin cancer, major burns, and irregular growths. On the other end, the sun can cause minor burns, wrinkles, and age spots. Either way, sun exposure can be dangerous and should be treated seriously.

How To Protect the Body

  • Sunscreen - This should be used every single day. Put on a layer before your morning moisturizer. Put on a layer before going outside. Reapply often. Sunscreen is your friend, so use it often.

  • Sunshades - The eyes can be damaged by the sun, too. If you’re outdoors in the daytime, sunshades are a good idea. Keep a pair in your bag and in your car, and you’ll rarely be without.

  • Layers - Layers allow you to protect yourself from the sun and the weather at the same time. Wear short sleeves, but carry a wrap or shawl. Take a jacket. Bring a hat. All of these provide one more barrier between your skin and the sun to keep you safe.

  • Shade - If there’s shade available, get in it. The shade can keep the sun off of your skin and can also keep the temperature lower. Win-win.

  • Moisturizer - Moisturizer, just like sunscreen, should be a staple in your life. Apply it in the morning, reapply throughout the day, and at night before you go to bed. This keeps the skin soft and supple, and it can help with fine lines and wrinkles, too.

It’s important to protect yourself from the sun, especially in the summer months when the sun is at its closest. Use these tips to keep your body safe and protected, and you may be able to enjoy the sun without the dangers for years to come.
