A Pear a Day May Be Good As Well
By Tom Herrin
A lot of the old sayings have meaning. They started somewhere. Most people have heard about how much good apples can be for their health in general. Oranges also have a reputation for helping to fight off colds and other illnesses. Pears are fruits that are often overlooked for their benefits. They were popular with many children, but adults sometimes seem to feel that they have moved on. Pears are not for just a few but can serve some meaningful purposes in terms of having an impact on health. It may actually very well be that eating a pear a day can have quite an impact on improving or protecting health.
They Can Provide Antioxidants
In recent years, the importance of antioxidants has been much publicized. Foods with them can help to fight many diseases including some cancers. Pears have Vitamins A and C along with beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin; all have antioxidant properties. This means that pears may be a good food to be included on the daily menu. It is a pretty simple formula for providing better health.
They May Help Protect the Heart
Sometimes the very simplest of things can payoff big. Pears have a sizable amount of potassium. It is known for its ability to manage blood pressure. Potassium can help the blood vessels to expand under pressure. This is quite the opposite of what happens when people have fatty deposits in the blood that settles onto the walls of the vessels and causes them to harden. When they can expand, the pressure can be kept at a healthy level. This not only saves wear on the vessels themselves but also prevents damage to the heart.
They Are Good and Easy
Raw pears are a good food to take with you when you pack a lunch or snack. They are naturally sweet and, with their high water content and fiber, they can seem really filling. This can help with any kind of effort to manage weight. They are always good in a fruit dessert dish. We have them in cobblers or fruit salads. They are a good fruit to eat right out of a can with breakfast. If you are wanting to add something to your diet for a little change, pears are an easy choice.
