Smart Ways to Walk Off Stress
By Sandy Schroeder
Everybody knows walking is super effective and super flexible, easily fitting into our schedules, locations and times. But one of its biggest assets may be the one you take for granted -- that’s the relaxed de-stressed feeling you get the minute you step out the door.
Prevention.com says we should all be aware of how effective walking can be for eliminating stress, and then take advantage of it whenever we can.
When you make walking a daily 20-30 minute exercise, Prevention tells us it may have the same calming effect as a mild tranquilizer. They say it can also enhance self-esteem and fight depression.
Walking Can Be A Creative Springboard
If you think about what happens when you go walking, you may be able to expand on its benefits. I know techies who use walking as a way to meet and then create new ideas. Others use it to mull over problems or consider new concepts. They come back ready to work and completely pleased.
Walking Can Be Moving Meditation
Prevention says walking at a low-intensity pace can become a form of meditation too. All they had to do was pay attention to their footsteps, counting "one, two, one, two" and visualizing each number in their minds as they went along. If they found their thoughts drifting to other matters, they simply said, "Oh, well" and resumed counting their footsteps.
The combination of meditating and low-intensity walking produced dramatic results, according to cardiologist James Rippe, MD. He said people who meditate while they walk have reported a decrease in anxiety and an increase in positive feelings about their situations.
