Getting the Back Pain Relief You Need and Deserve

By Stephen R. Farris

Sitting for prolonged periods, twisting the wrong way, not using proper technique when picking up objects are all casual and occupational hazards that can lead to back pain.

The first thing you probably do is to sit/lay down to rest and/or take some type of over-the-counter medication to see if the pain goes away. This may help, but OTCs can become addictive.

Your best bet is to visit with your local chiropractor. He/she can give you the best advice as to how you should handle your back pain, as well as help provide relief.

While talking with your local chiropractor, he/she may -- in addition to treatment options -- provide a few simple exercises you can do at home to help speed up the recovery process. They may also suggest a few things to help relieve the pressure off your back while sitting or at night while you rest. For example:

Use a Pillow

Naturally, you probably use one anyway for your head. But you can also use one under the knees to take pressure off of your lower-back area.

Core Work

Your core is like the central hub for your body. Basically, every movement your body does usually derives from your core. So the bottom line is to keep your core healthy by exercising the muscles in the central part of your body on a regular basis to help prevent injury, especially in your back.

Add More Calcium and Vitamin D to Your Diet

Nutritionally speaking, you should have a daily dose of calcium and Vitamin D in your diet. These can be found in food products as well as vitamin supplements. They help keep your bones strong, and strong bones can reduce your risk of developing osteoporosis. Calcium can be found in these food products; milk, yogurt, and leafy green veggies. Vitamin D is usually found in fatty fish, beef liver, cheese, and egg yolks.

Changing Your Shoes

Changing your shoes can help reduce or in some cases, eliminate back pain. Wearing the wrong size or ones that cause discomfort can not only cause back pain, but can produce foot, ankle, knee, and/or hip pain.

Practicing good posture can be a key factor in reducing or eventually eliminating back pain. So the next time back pain hits you, visit your local chiropractor such as the ones that can be found at The Joint Chiropractic. They have more than 600 nationwide locations, no appointment is necessary and you don't have to worry about insurance copays. Check your local listings or on the web to find the closest one near you and get the pain relief you deserve!
