Working Out as a Family is Great Quality Time!
By Donna Stark
It's tough to stay on track with your health and fitness goals while balancing school or work, but when you add a family to the mix? Boy, the time sure does have a way of disappearing, doesn't it? It seems that everyone but you is getting all of that extra time, the time that is needed to achieve all of your fitness goals. Frustrating, isn't it? Especially when you have to skip yet another day of working out because the demands of life are calling your name. But it doesn't have to be like that. By making exercise a part of your family time, not only will you be able to stay in shape, you will also be able to create lasting memories and share priceless moments with those you love.
Fitness With the Family
Spending time with loved ones and achieving optimal health and fitness is high on most people's priority list, but it can be difficult to do both. So why not combine the two? It's easier than you think. Let's take a look at some tips on how to exercise as a family.
- Walk - Get everyone together and make it a daily routine to go for a family walk. If you have small children, have them ride their bikes so that you can maintain a pace that works with your fitness level. If you have a baby, strap them in a harness; the extra weight will make the walk more challenging for you.
- Circuit training - Take your kids to the park and get some circuit training in as they are climbing the monkey bars. Choose from a combination of squats, dips, lunges, push-ups, and planks for a complete and successful workout.
- Play - Encourage a love of exercise from the start simply by playing with your children. Head to your backyard or local park for a game of soccer, tennis, or basketball, or create some fun obstacle courses and divide the family into teams. The options are endless!
Building Great Habits
Just because you have some little ones hanging on your legs every day doesn't mean your health and fitness goals have to go to the wayside. Working out as a family is a great way to fit your exercise in while also spending quality time with your loved ones. And you'll be encouraging good habits of fitness in your children from a young age that they can carry with them for life!
Additionally, by taking your workouts outside, your family can experience even more benefits than just getting fit. Studies have shown that exercising outdoors can reduce stress, improve moods, and boost the body's immune system. So what are you waiting for? Start recouping some of that time that you have been giving away and grab your loved ones for a family workout!
