A Walking Workout You Can Do at Home

By Sara Butler

Walking is one of the easiest ways you can get your body moving to stay healthy. There are many reasons people give for not jumping on board the walking workout train, but it's time to put the excuses aside. It turns out that you can get healthier with walking and never even leave your house. Here's the skinny on house walking and how you can use it to get healthier.

House Walking: What is it?

You're probably thinking to yourself that you walk around your house all the time -- how does that make it a workout? Well, house walkers do walk around their house, but they do it with a little flair.

Instead of getting up and walking into the kitchen, people focused on getting their walking workout in at home look to get as many steps as possible. So, instead of walking down to the basement to get the laundry, they might take 10 minutes and walk up and down the stairs, then get the laundry. Or they might take the 30 minutes that their favorite show is on and walk in place as they watch it. At the end of the day, all these steps add up to a big number that helps them get healthy.

A Few House Walking Tips

House walking may seem a little daunting at first, but if you have a basic plan, then it's actually pretty easy. Here are some tips to help you get started:

  • Set a goal - House walking isn't going to take you anywhere if you don't have a solid goal. Set up a realistic step goal that helps you aim for a specific number of steps in a day. This can help you to get up and get moving if you notice that you're not getting as many steps as you should. It also may be a good idea to set up a goal to increase your steps each week by 500 or 1,000 steps. Remember, it's important to continually push yourself to do more.
  • Buy a fitness tracker - If you're going to try your hand at house walking, you need a way to count your steps. Fitness trackers are the perfect way to get this done and help you stay on track. A smartphone app or a basic pedometer will do if you don't want to invest a lot of money.
  • Get moving - The less you're sitting still, the more steps you'll take! Every 15 minutes, take a lap around the house or get up during each commercial break and walk in place. The point is not to stay in one spot for too long.

Walking is a workout you can do just about anywhere!
