Easy Tips to Take the Pain Out of Driving
By Donna Stark
Does it feel like you spend more of your time in your car than you do at home? When you are finished driving for the day, does it feel like your back and neck are screaming in pain? There's a reason for that! The seats in your cars weren't built for the hours and hours of driving you do each day. In fact, they were designed for the complete opposite! That's why spending long amounts of time behind the wheel can lead to some serious discomfort in your back, neck, and shoulders. Fortunately, there are some simple things you can do to relieve, and even prevent, some of that pain. Take a look at what your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic suggest.
Pack a Back Pain Care Package
If you know you will be spending a lengthy amount of time behind the wheel you should consider bringing some helpful items along with you. Head to the store and buy yourself a lumbar support pillow, or just place a rolled-up towel between your lower back and the seat of the car. Heating pads and cold packs are also easy ways to help prevent soreness. And if all else fails, a quick trip to see your chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic should do the trick.
Take Breaks
Our bodies are not meant to sit in the same position for hours at a time, so try to take as many breaks as you possibly can. Hop out of the car, go for a short walk, and do some stretching if you have the time for it. If time is not on your side, use your trips to the gas station to your advantage. Take a walk inside to get a drink or do some squats and lunges while the gas tank is filling up. You may feel silly doing them, but they are a great way to loosen your joints and get your blood pumping.
Create a Comfortable Environment
Never forget to adjust your seat before you depart on your road trip. Your feet should sit flat on the floor and there should be enough room for you to sit upright with your shoulders pulled back. It is important that you are neither leaning over nor reclining back. It's also important to dress in comfortable clothes and shoes. If you are not dressed comfortably your drive could end up being miserable.
Driving Doesn't Need to Hurt
Your driving obligations may not go away anytime soon, but if you follow the suggestions above, the pain you feel while doing so will. And if it doesn't, remember that your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic are standing by, ready to help!
