Foods That Make Inflammation Worse

By Sara Butler

Chronic inflammation is a problem that many people have but may not be aware of. Chronic inflammation has been shown to increase the likelihood of suffering from heart disease and has been linked to unhealthy body weight, too. But chronic inflammation isn't something you are helpless against. One of the easiest ways to help control it is to watch what you eat. Here are a few of the foods that you should steer clear of since they can make chronic inflammation worse.

White Bread

Products made from wheat that are highly processed, such as pasta and white bread, can make inflammation worse. These foods have been stripped of their nutrients and fiber, causing your body to digest them quickly and your blood sugar levels to rise just as fast. That spike in insulin can contribute to inflammation.

Deep-Fried Foods

You already know that deep-fried foods aren't a healthy choice, but they might be hurting you more than you realize. Diets high in foods that have been deep-fried cause more inflammation. That's why those deep-fried Oreos you get at the fair should only be a once-in-awhile treat. Same goes with those french fries.

Sugar

Are you sensing a pattern here? Foods high in refined sugars can also cause inflammation in the body. Foods high in sugar, as well as preservatives, have been found to damage the lining of your gut and cause inflammation. It's probably a good rule of thumb to lay off highly processed foods and focus on eating fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. And forget soda -- that's simply liquid sugar and is doing your body no favors in the health department.

Oils

Oils that are high in omega-3 fatty acids are good for you. But the oils high in omega-6 fatty acids are the ones that you need to be on the lookout for.

You must work to balance your omega-3 and omega-6 intake. If it's out of whack, then it can lead to chronic inflammation and promote disease. You should limit the amount of certain oils in your diet such as soy, peanut, grapeseed, cottonseed, sunflower, and canola to help you find the right balance.
