Easy Ways You Can Start to Eat Healthily

By Sara Butler

If you want to be healthy, no miracle diet can do it for you. Experts say the best strategy is to find a balance when it comes to healthy eating and learning how to listen to your body for its cues. If you want to work on your healthy eating habits, then adding a few simple changes that don't feel restrictive or overwhelming is all you need. Here are some ways you can get started easily!

Surround Yourself With Healthy Choices

You know you're going to snack. So, instead of trying to deny yourself or grabbing that bag of chips, have healthier food choices on hand such as apples and nut butter, popcorn, nuts, cheese sticks, and fresh fruit.

Pile Up on Vegetables

When creating your plate at a meal, shoot to have at least half of your plate comprised of vegetables. Doing so can help you to fill up faster on low-calorie choices that also happen to be full of nutrients your body needs. Try roasted vegetables or salad -- just be careful about how much salad dressing you add.

Drink Plenty of Water

Water helps you to stay hydrated. Being dehydrated can actually cause you to confuse your body's signals and eat more. Also, drinking water regularly throughout the day means you're less likely to pick up a sugary beverage such as soda, juice, or a coffee drink.

Use Whole Grains

Many people think they need to eliminate carbohydrates from their diets, but doing so is a mistake. Instead, make better choices when it comes to grains and opt for whole ones that have more fiber. Instead of white bread or white pasta, try whole grain bread and whole grain pasta. You can also opt for whole grain crackers and even tortillas.

Portion It Out

When you portion your food you don't necessarily need to portion it out exactly in order to restrict yourself. What you should try to focus on instead is portion the right amount of different types of food at each meal. For example, a balanced lunch will have one to two cups of vegetables, one serving of a complex carbohydrate, about 5 ounces of protein, and a serving of a healthy fat. If you follow a similar formula, then you should walk away from the table feeling full and satisfied.

You can easily make small changes that lead to big gains for your health and wellness. Try a few of these tips to see just how easy it can be.
