Having Fun the Safe Way
By Donna Stark
Whether you are swimming, boating, camping, surfing, exploring, or gardening, if there is one thing that we can all agree on, it's that summer is the season of fun! But no matter what activity you and your loved ones are participating in, you have to remember to do one very important thing: prioritize the safety and well-being of everyone involved! Take a look at the following safety tips that your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic recommend.
Use Your Sunscreen
If your summer plans involve lots of fresh air and sunshine, make sure you are applying and reapplying sunscreen every time you head outdoors. Put it on all areas of exposed skin, paying particular attention to the tops of your ears, lips, and face. And don't forget to apply some to your feet as well! A good way to remember doing this is to keep a bottle of sunscreen by your front door, in your car, and next to your pool bag or suitcases.
Observe, Don't Invade
While it may be tempting to sneak up on that flock of geese by the river or to feed the baby deer by hand, it's good to remember why they are called wildlife. Animals can be very unpredictable and if they are startled or angered by your human invasion, things can quickly become very wild! It's OK if you want to take a look, but make sure you are giving them plenty of space to be themselves.
Check Your Body
Speaking of critters, if your summer adventures lead you to the woods or through patches of high vegetation, you may end up coming home with a few extra friends. If you live or visit an area that is known for ticks, the smart thing to do is to give yourself and your loved ones a thorough check as soon as you can. Ticks can hide nearly anywhere on your body, clothes, and shoes so be sure to look closely and carefully.
Be Careful Near Fire
Nothing smells like summer as much as a campfire does and for many people, there is no better way to end the night, but you need to be on high alert when around one! Never run around the fire or step too close, don't throw anything big or heavy into the fire when others are sitting close by, and pay attention to the fire pokers and marshmallow sticks. They can easily cause burns if left in or near the fire for too long.
Enjoying a Safe Summer
After a long, dreary winter and a wet, chilly spring, it's time to head outdoors and enjoy the summer fun. Just remember to keep everyone's safety and well-being in mind before you head out though! Be smart, stay safe, and above all, have the time of your life!
