Working in the Yard Can Be Painful: Try This

By Virginia Laird

As the air becomes cool and crisp, it is the signal of a much bigger change in nature. With the onset of fall, trees begin to shed their leaves. And, as fall hits your home, not only will you need to rake, it will be time to change your lovely yard to fall foliage. As you prepare to work in the yard, you may begin to dread the pain that can accompany such work. Chiropractors have provided several tips to help you prevent such pain, including:

  • Stretch out before working in the yard
  • Take breaks often
  • Avoid heavy lifting

Stretch Out Before Working in the Yard

While it may sound slightly absurd, stretching before you head out to the yard for work can be helpful in keeping back pain away. These stretches can be simple, but should include the back and neck. Chiropractors encourage patients to start making stretches part of their regular yard work regimen. Consider making time to add stretches before you head out to work in the yard.

Take Breaks Often

Any time you plan to begin grueling work, it is best to plan for plenty of breaks. Chiropractors insist that taking breaks can help stave off back pain. During these breaks, it is advised that you stretch to release tension that may have built during your work. It is also a good idea to get off of your feet for a few minutes to help give your back a break. The next time you head out for yard work, make sure you allow for plenty of time for such breaks.

Avoid Heavy Lifting

Although it may be just yard work, it can entail plenty of heavy lifting. Chiropractors preach that heavy lifting can tug at the spine which can lead to restriction and pain. Rather that inviting such pain, enlist a friend or two to help share the weight of heavy lifting. At times, such heavy lifting can lead to injury, which for some, can be irreparable. Plan ahead of time so that you can be sure to get the help you need to avoid such pain.

If you are one who has tried all the tips you can to prevent your back pain, it is time to give routine chiropractic care a try. While at your chiropractor, you will help establish your personalized pain prevention plan. Using adjustments to the joints of the spine, your chiropractor will work to restore function and release restriction.
