Walking for Optimal Health
By Donna Stark
Even though everything may point to the opposite, exercise really doesn't need to be complicated. If your goal is to simply improve your health, you don't need a complex fitness routine to get you there. You just need to move. And something as simple as a daily walk will fit the bill. Walking can help you maintain a healthy weight, reduce the risk of serious medical issues, strengthen your bones and muscles, improve your mood, and increase your energy. It's the perfect way to achieve better health, so why don't you start today? Here are some easy tips to get you motivated to do so!
Walk When You Talk
Whether you are on your phone a lot during the day or find yourself just taking random calls here and there, use that time wisely. Get out of your chair and walk around your home or office while talking. And if the weather is nice, head outdoors for your chat session! Walking while you are talking is a great way to add steps into your day without taking any time away from your work.
Walk to Escape
Do you love escaping to another world while reading? Reading is definitely one of the healthiest hobbies for your mind, but if you find yourself sitting for hours on end, it may not be so good for your body. Fortunately, you can balance your love for books and your need to stay physically active by listening to an audiobook during your walks. Why don't you choose this option the next time you are itching for a new story?
Walk at Every Opportunity
If you live close enough to your child's school, your work, or the local market, why don't you try walking there some days instead of mindlessly getting in your car? You can also park a little farther in the parking lot, take the stairs instead of the elevator, and walk to your coworker's desk for a face-to-face discussion. All of those extra steps will add up!
Walk With a Friend
Walking with a friend or family member is an easy way to stay accountable and will encourage you to stick to this new habit of yours. Ask a coworker to join you for a walk during your lunch break or get the entire family moving after dinner. Spending time with your loved ones is a fun way to collect those steps!
A Step in the Right Direction
Remember, the more you walk, the greater the benefits you will receive! So, are you ready to take that first step? If you answered yes, you can count on the fact that it will be in the right direction!
