Taking Up Square Dancing May Improve Your Health
By Tom Herrin
We have become a pretty packaged society in that we expect to be able to buy so many things ready made, including programs that promote better health. There are still some things that have little or no cost that many people never think of. One thing that is quite popular with many people is square dancing. It is one of those things that the whole family can take up and develop an interest in. I have known some families who meet in clubs and spend a night each weekend with others who share that same love for the dancing.
It Provides Good Exercise
There is quite a bit of movement in square dancing. As people shuffle around through the various steps, it is believed they can easily do the equivalent of three to five miles of walking. That is a decent workout for just about anyone. As they do this, they will improve blood flow and can help to supply the oxygen that is needed to keep body parts healthy.
It Can Keep the Mind Active
Square dancing involves learning what each of the various calls means. They are instructions for the dancers that must be followed or the dancing would become chaos. As the caller gives the instructions, the dancers must follow what they are told to do. The process is reasonably fast, so there is little time for indecision. It gives the mind a good workout while doing the same for the body. Exercising the mind is considered a good practice for helping to avoid things such as dementia and other mental processing issues.
It Can Be a Good Way to Wrap Up the Day
Most of us can use some way to deal with stress. We have it in work, school, finances, and simply the everyday ordeals of life. Square dancing can be both relaxing, renewing, and invigorating. If we are able to relax and relieve some of the tensions we are dealing with, we become more physically efficient, sleep better, and think clearer. When you add in the fact that square dancing is a really wholesome activity for the entire family, you really can’t go wrong by giving it a try. It is sure to surprise you and may do some pretty good things for your health.
