Do Peas Seem Like a Dessert to You?
By Tom Herrin
More than likely, there are some foods that fall into the category of “no way” for everybody. How they select those foods they won’t touch may vary widely. Some people simply don’t like the looks of certain foods. Others don’t like the sound of whatever it is. Still others have heard that someone else doesn’t like a certain food and make their decision based on that. It is important that parents introduce children to a variety of foods. One of the most maligned foods seems to be peas. They appear to get a bad rap repeatedly. The reality is that peas can be a great part of a diet and offer many benefits.
They May Help with Weight Management
Peas are high in protein and fiber. Both of these things can help to make a person feel fuller for a longer period of time. Added to this is the fact that they are low in calories. They are also low in fat. Since they may be eaten in place of meat, people can avoid many of the problems associated with foods such as red meats.
The May Help with Blood Sugar
The high protein and fiber content in peas can slow the digestion of sugar. Some of the other contents in peas are believed to reverse insulin resistance. This means that the body will be better able to use the insulin produced by the body to regulate its use of sugar. With the almost epidemic number of instances of type 2 diabetes in this country today, anything that may help to regulate the blood sugar can be a great help. Peas can be an easy addition to a diet.
They May Help Deter Heart Disease
Peas contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatory substances that can help to reduce the effects on the blood vessels. This can also lessen the pressure placed on the heart as it works to pump blood through the body. A good supply of vitamins can add to the list of things that can help as well. Peas may not seem like a dessert to you, but with the kinds of benefits they may provide, they can start to taste like candy to someone looking for a high-powered food for little cost. I actually enjoy eating them right out of a can as a simple treat.
