Pears Are Not Just for Kids

By Tom Herrin

At times, it seems that people believe that some foods are for kids while others are for adults.  Aside from those that have some obvious ingredients that can be harmful, foods are pretty basic.  Those foods that may be eaten raw are almost always at least a little bit healthy.  Fruits are certainly something that should be included on most menus.  Many times, people think that some things are simply not for them.  Pears are available in many baby foods, and many people leave it at that.  They may never again take a bite of this delicious fruit.  Pears can provide some good things for health.

They May Be Good for Digestion

Pears have a high water content.  This always aids in digesting food.  They have plenty of fiber with an average one providing as much as 18 percent of the daily recommended amount of fiber.  They have a few other properties that are unique to them.  The soft sandy feeling in their texture is apparently helpful in binding cancer-causing agents in the colon.

They May Help Improve Circulation

Pears contain some pretty significant nutrients.  They have both iron and copper.  Most people know the role of iron in health.  It helps the blood to carry oxygen.  This means people will be able to burn more fuel to provide more energy.  Those low in iron usually run out of gas quickly when they exert themselves.  This general feeling of fatigue on an ongoing basis is a common indicator of low iron.  Eating pears can help that.  Copper helps the blood to have a greater ability to take in and utilize minerals.  It is critical to the body in trying to make use of those minerals that are available.

They Taste Good

Pears are a great food to grab and take with you when you are in a hurry.  They have that soft feel that makes them so easy to eat.  They are always good out a can with cottage cheese or something else on top.  We have them sometimes in a cobbler baked with some type of topping. They are one of those first foods that many people serve to babies when they begin eating foods.  I have always enjoyed pear nectar.  It has a flavor and texture all its own.  Try adding some to your diet in whatever way you would like to try.
