Does Shift Work Leave You Out of Life?

By Tom Herrin

While there was once a generally accepted notion that most people worked from morning until evening, much of that has changed.  Without a doubt, the old familiar schedule likely had something to do with the life of a farmer.  Their day was largely ruled by the sun.  With the use of the electric light, people were able to operate businesses around the clock, or at least much of it.  This meant people needed to work an assortment of odd schedules.  The number of people working some kind of shifts today is estimated to be well up in the millions.  While it is pretty common, it also still has its issues that must be dealt with.

Find Ways to Be Prepared

Like so many other things people must adapt to, working any kind of a shift can be a challenge.  In order for people to avoid some potential problems, a few suggestions have been made to help them.  One of those is to take a walk around, preferably in the sunshine, so that they may be able to re-energize themselves.  Another thing may be to avoid drinking caffeinated drinks once they get very long into their shift.  This may help them to sleep more effectively once they get off.  Getting enough sleep is critical, and health may suffer without it.  Planning ahead and remembering that a shift is coming up is helpful.

Other Measures May Help

Employers are encouraged to spend time and resources training workers as to things they may do to help as well.  Workers are also advised to create a strict schedule that can protect a few hours of time for rest and refuge from work.  Taking breaks every hour or two may be another thing that can help.  Even though people work these shifts all of the time, some studies indicate that without adequate intervention, safety may be compromised.

Don't Forget Family Time

It is sometimes too easy for those who work odd shifts to get into habits that may exclude family.  Everyone may accept the fact that you work when others sleep and sleep when they are active.  It may require some careful planning to avoid getting into a rut that builds a wall between the shift worker and other family members.  You can make it work and guard your health at the same time, but it is necessary to take the right precautionary steps.
