How to Motivate Yourself to Get Fit

By Genevieve Cunningham

Most people are eager to boost their own health and get fit. Seriously, who doesn't want a summer body all year round? Unfortunately, when achieving this goal, desire is not the problem. It's the lack of motivation that keeps us down. Finding and keeping motivation is a tough gig, and the longer we go without it, the harder it is to find. So what can we do? While we can certainly turn to a trainer or a special diet to get us moving, it's creating our own motivation that makes us successful. If you’re ready to get motivated and get fit, take a look at these tips to help you out.

Set Big Goals

It's OK to think big. It's OK to think about the dream body. And it's absolutely OK to set big goals for yourself and your future. Want to lose 100 pounds? That's amazing … write it down. Want to drop five pant sizes? Add it to the list. Sometimes making goals that seem too far and out of reach actually works. It gives you something to strive for, somewhere to set your sights. As you inch closer to meeting your goals, you’ll see that the dream body is getting closer and closer, which might make it easier to keep going.

Set Small Goals

While big goals are great, it's also important to set smaller goals that can be reached with relative ease. Maybe you want to lose two pounds in a week or lose just one inch from your waist. These kinds of goals allow you to feel a little bit of success. They allow you to get that taste of change. Along with those big goals, find a few small ones to incorporate into the mix. When you're feeling frustrated, these tiny successes might help keep you going.

Get a Buddy

You don't have to tackle the weight loss thing alone. Getting fit is sometimes easier when multiple people are involved. Find a friend or two to join in on the fitness fun. When one of you is struggling, the other can pick up the slack and bring the motivation. Inevitably, this will switch back and forth between the both of you, but by having a buddy, there will always be someone to keep the progress moving forward.

Don't feel too bad if you’re unmotivated in the fitness department. Most people have a hard time with it. But when you're ready to take action, use these tips to get you moving and keep you motivated. When you create your own motivation, fitness success and a body to be proud of may be just around the corner.
