Try These Healthy, Delicious Classic Sandwich Twists

By Paul Rothbart

Since the Earl of Sandwich invented the food item that bears his name, these tasty, convenient, handheld meals have soared in popularity. There are dozens of varieties and the sandwich is many people's first choice for lunch. Breakfast sandwiches are also now common for the same reasons of convenience and taste and there are the big sandwiches. These behemoths can provide the nutrition of an entire dinner. The healthiness of a sandwich depends upon the ingredients used. You can enjoy great flavors as well as solid nutrition with these twists on sandwich classics.

Caprese Grilled Cheese

One of the most popular and comforting sandwiches is grilled cheese. They are often made with white bread and processed cheese. They may taste good, but they are not the healthiest thing you can eat. Fortunately, there are many possible variations on this staple sandwich. By using Italian bread, mozzarella cheese, tomato, and fresh basil, you can make a Caprese-style sandwich that is packed with both nutrition and flavor.

Turkey, Hummus, and Avocado

Turkey is another popular sandwich meat. By quality deli turkey without additives for your sandwich and choose a healthy bread, such as whole grain or whole wheat. Spread hummus rather than mayo and add avocado and cucumber slices. You get a delicious, Mediterranean-style sandwich that is very healthy.

Mango Chicken Salad

Chicken salad is another classic sandwich and chicken is a healthy protein, especially if you cook and slice it yourself. Go light on the mayo and try adding mango for a sweet, tropical twist. Mangos are one of the more nutritious fruits. Add some lettuce or other healthy greens and you've got a unique take on the chicken salad sandwich that tastes great and is very healthy.

Spinach and Feta Grilled Cheese

Another variation on grilled cheese, using feta cheese and adding spinach gives the sandwich a Greek flair. Spinach is well known for its nutrition content and feta cheese contains less fat than most cheese while still retaining a solid protein content. Feta also melts with that nice gooey texture that people love. Try using a ciabatta roll or pita to complete the Mediterranean theme.

Eggs, Tomatoes, and Scallions

For a healthy, delicious sandwich that you can eat for breakfast or lunch, try slicing hard-boiled eggs and layering them on your favorite sandwich roll. Spread light mayo, and add fresh tomato slices. Sprinkle with chopped scallions and season with some pepper and you've got a nutritious meal in your hand that will also delight your taste buds.

Sandwiches have been popular as a convenient meal for centuries. You can't beat them for eating on the go. But you don't have to sacrifice nutrition for convenience. Try some of these healthy sandwich alternatives.
