3 Exercises for People Who Hate Exercise

By Genevieve Cunningham

There are people out there who really love to exercise. They love absolutely everything about it. They make careers out of burning fat and building muscle. While these people are awesome, not everyone falls into this category. In fact, there is another (perhaps larger) group of people who absolutely despise exercise. If you fall into the second category, you’re a bit out of luck. Like it or not, exercise is necessary for a healthy life. So what are you supposed to do? Is there any way to get in some exercise without despising every minute? Maybe. If you don’t particularly care for working out, take a look at these three great ways to exercise for those who hate the practice.

Walking

It doesn’t matter how much you hate exercise, there’s a good chance that walking is still going to be a part of your life. Since you really can’t avoid it, why not do it just a little bit more and gain a little good from it? Take a walk around the block or around the mall. Go to the park or a local hiking trail. Or you could even buy a treadmill and plop it in front of the TV. Walking is low-impact and easy on the body, yet you’ll still improve your health in multiple ways. For anyone who hates exercise, walking might be the best bet.

Swimming

Swimming is a great workout. It tires the muscles and expands the lungs. Once you get out of the water, you’ll likely feel exhausted. So why is it good for exercise haters? Because it’s fun! When you get in the water, it usually doesn’t feel like a workout. You don’t dive in thinking about breaking a sweat. You get in the water to relax. If you want to also get in shape, hop in the water and swim just a few laps before you lounge. If you have the facilities, this is a great way to work out without ever giving it much in the way of deliberate thought.

Easy Yoga

Yoga is a great way to stay in shape. But if you get too serious about it, it will definitely feel like you’re working out. If you’re not a fan of exercise, it’s best to take a light and easy approach. Choose a very slow and gentle yoga. Do it in the morning or before bed, and it might help you relax while still working the muscles. Over time, you may learn to enjoy it and be able to take it up a notch. But even if you never develop a love for the practice, a gentle yoga practice will be worth the small effort.

Not everyone loves exercise, and truly, that’s OK. Unfortunately, whether you like to work out or not, it’s still important to make it a part of your life. If you’re not crazy about hitting the gym, use these exercises to get moving in a healthier direction without the dread or distaste for a regular workout.
