How to Stop Binge Eating
By Genevieve Cunningham
Binge eating. Chances are good that you've done your own binge eating at least once in your life. We all fall victim to this trap. We think we're going to reach for just one cookie and that turns into three cookies, a bag of chips, a scoop of ice cream, and a spoonful of Nutella. If this sounds familiar, then chances are also good that you've noticed the effect of this bad habit on your waistline. The good news? There's hope! If you need to end the cycle of binge eating in your life, take a look at these helpful tips.
Stay Busy
Most instances of binge eating happen when we don't have anything else to do. We're bored. And instead of finding something else to do, we reach for the food. If this sounds like you, it's imperative that you stay busy. Find something -- almost anything -- to do with your hands. Pick up a hobby. Get really into exercise. Read a book or write or learn to knit. It doesn't really matter what you do. It's the fact that you have something to keep you occupied that keeps you from reaching for the food to satisfy the boredom.
Allow a Few Indulgences
Sometimes we're just too strict. If you never allow yourself any indulgences, you're far more likely to binge. If you want to keep the binges under control, allow some moments of indulgence. Eat the dessert every now and again. Try the cake, drink the mixed beverage, and go for the second helping. Once you've satisfied the need to indulge, you can go back to your healthier ways with little, if any, harm done at all.
Get Some Advice
Sometimes binge eating has deep seated causes behind it, the most common being emotional issues. If you can't seem to get a handle on your binge eating, it might be time to reach out for professional help. See a therapist to help determine and work out any issues that you may have. You may be surprised at how much getting emotional and mental help changes your physical well-being and your life, too.
Binge eating is a bad habit that can lead to excess weight gain, low self-esteem, and a load of other problems. Get your binge eating under control with these tips.
