Breakfast: Essential to the Start of Each Day

By Stephen R. Farris

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It helps to wake up our bodies and give us the energy we need to start the morning. On average, most people skip over breakfast, opting to slug down an energy drink or two. Or when they do decide to grab a bite before work or school, the local donut palace receives the nod. Either way -- on the latters -- you're headed down a slippery slope with your health.

So why not get up a little earlier in the mornings and make time to eat a good, healthy nutritional breakfast that will kick-start your day. Here are a few healthy foods you can try.

Raspberries

Sure, you can eat them by themselves or add to a bowl of cereal. Just one cup of these has about 8 grams of fiber, and fiber is important to have in our diets.

Oatmeal

Another great choice that is also loaded with -- you guessed it -- fiber. Oatmeal also has slow-release carbs and can help aid in weight loss, especially if eaten a few hours before exercise. Because of the fiber, oatmeal leaves you feeling fuller too. However, you might want to leave out the sugar.

Peanut Butter

Who would have thought peanut butter as a healthy fat, but it is. Plus it contains fiber and protein, both of which are essential for your body's nutritional needs. Just two tablespoons of peanut butter is 200 calories, boasting 7 grams of protein and 2 grams of fiber. You can even add it to your oatmeal breakfast as a game changer too.

Eggs

On to the incredible, edible egg! A large egg is approximately 70 calories, but it has 6 grams of protein packed in it. Eggs contain nutrients such as calcium and antioxidants -- lutein and zeaxanthin that help in eye protection. Eggs can be cooked in many different ways such as fried, scrambled, poached, baked or omelet style -- with a little cheese and peppers to add a little extra flavor. An egg on top of avocado toast is very delicious.
