Keep the Flu Away This Season with These Tips

By Virginia Laird

The flu virus can be like a guest at your party who was not invited. While there is little you can do to completely avoid this illness, health and wellness experts suggest that following good hygiene, among a few other things, can reduce your chances of falling victim to this virus. A few tips these experts offer include:

  • Always have sanitizer handy
  • Give yourself a break
  • Sleep, get plenty of it

Always Have Sanitizer Handy

While handwashing is the best thing to keep germs free from your hands, it is not always convenient. For this reason health and wellness experts suggest that you should always keep hand sanitizer with you. This can allow you to sanitize after coming into contact with others, touching door knobs, or any other time you think it may be necessary to sanitize. It is recommended that you always keep sanitizer in your pocket or in your bag. It can also be wise to share it with others. Some believe that keeping your hands clean of germs is as simple as being able to share hand sanitizer with those around you too.

Give Yourself a Break

When you are ill, it is vital that you give yourself a break. Health and wellness experts advise that staying home when you are sick is best. There are a couple reasons for this. First, this can allow you the rest you need to build strength and get well. When you are ill, your body is more susceptible to catching another illness. Another reason you should stay home when you are sick is to prevent the spread of your germs to others. This fall and throughout the winter as you find yourself ill, be courteous to others and mindful of your health and stay home.

Sleep, Get Plenty of It

Sleep can be your best friend. Research suggests that those who lack plenty of sleep are more vulnerable to getting ill than those who get plenty of sleep. For many, getting enough sleep may mean setting a bedtime and sticking to it. Research suggests that the average adult should get at least six hours of sleep each night. However, plenty of people need more than this. Start making your sleep a priority today.

With flu in full swing, now is the time to begin taking the proper precautions to make sure you and your family stay flu-free this season.
