Improve Your Work Life to Improve Your Health

By Rachel Shouse

Work isn't always going to be fun. There are parts of everyone's job description that they're not super pumped about. However, you shouldn't feel that dread all day everyday. Some of you may benefit from a career path change, switching companies, furthering your education, the sky's the limit. Those are rather extreme changes you could potentially do if the opportunities arise. Getting to where you want to be takes work. There are ways you can make the process more enjoyable. Creating a helpful routine, maintaining positive relationships within the workplace, and implementing boundaries both for yourself and for your colleagues will help make your job more enjoyable.

Time Management and Organization

Time management, consistency, and organization aren't always the most enjoyable goals to keep. You will see the benefits of following them very quickly. Instead of just going with it throughout your day, sit down and plan what you know you need to do that day. Some call this a brain dump. It's not an organized list. That comes after.

Organizing the list takes some brain power. Always worry about your highest priorities first, which are allowed to change by the way. If you have a job to get to, kids to raise, school to focus on, it doesn't matter. Start with the top priority and work your way down. If you run out of time, write those to-do's down for another day.

Maintaining Healthy Work Relationships

You're not going to get along with everyone you meet. It might be a good idea to make some friends at work though. That starts with you going above and beyond the call of duty. You don't just show up and do your job, talk to your coworkers. Getting to know them could also help clear up some problems you may have.

Creating Boundaries

Sometimes setting up boundaries can feel like you're being mean. It's normal, but still something you'll need to overcome at some point. Try to make it an important point though, you don't want to wait to talk to someone until you're already irate. That turns what should be a healthy conversation into a fight. Furthering problems even more, if I might add.

Again, don't expect yourself to always be happy at work. Don't go quit because you had a bad day. If this seems to have become a long-winded problem though, it's very likely that some new habits are needed. A piece of advice to help this along: write notes, set alarms, utilize tools in order to set yourself up for success. Work smarter, not harder.
