Are You Making These Sleep Mistakes?

By Sara Butler

Sleep is essential to your continued health and wellness. The problem is, it's something you do every day, which can make it difficult to identify mistakes you may be making. You've probably read your fill of tips for better sleep, but you may not know about the mistakes you're making that are having a negative impact on your sleep quality.

Mistake No. 1: It's Too Hot

Believe it or not, there is an ideal temperature for sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, a room between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit is perfect for sleep. That may be too cold during the day, but setting your thermostat low at night can help you sleep and promote more restful sleep, as well.

Mistake No. 2: Hanging On to an Old Pillow

Yes, that pillow may hold a lot of fond memories for you, but if it's older than two years, it's time for a new one. Pillows often break down a lot faster than you think they will. If your pillow is floppy and can easily be sandwiched and folded in half, then get a new one. Also, if you have allergies, old pillows can make it worse with all the dead skin cells and dust mites contained in them. Eww!

Mistake No. 3: Too Much Sugar

If you like to have a sugary snack before bed, then it may be making it more difficult to stay asleep at night. That's because your blood sugar climbs rapidly and then falls just as swiftly when you sleep after a sugary bedtime snack and that can wake you up. Stay away from sugary snacks before bed, just to be safe.

Mistake No. 4: Watching the Clock

You know how important sleep is, which is why anxiety rears its ugly head when you simply can't fall asleep. Once you get into bed, ensure your alarm is set and then turn the clock away if you need to. That way you can resist looking at the clock when you're laying there tossing and turning. If you ramp up the anxiety too much, then you won't be able to turn off your brain. Try counting sheep or focusing on your breathing in order to relax. It actually works!
