How Your Habits Are Affecting Your Back

By Rachel Shouse

There may be more in your daily routine that has a negative impact on your back than you may think. You've heard how important it is to bend with your knees than you may have wanted to. Although the repetition can be annoying, it's reality. You can do a lot of damage to your back by doing little things wrong frequently. There are ways to counteract these habits and get rid of them completely. Being mindful of what you're doing, implementing permanent changes, and visiting a chiropractor are all things that could make big differences in your everyday life.

Being Mindful of What You're Doing

Every human tends to make habits, good and bad. You pick things up a certain way, you lean in a certain direction, you even sit a certain way. All of these are OK, but some changes could really help. You can't focus on your back all day every day, but you could work on being mindful when it's necessary.

Simple things that you do during the day could impact your back more than you'd think. Even lifting heavy laundry hampers or lifting your child could do bad things if done improperly. Focusing on lifting with your legs, holding objects close to your body, and engaging your core muscles are all great ways to care for your back.

How to Implement Permanent Change

It can be hard to change a habit that you do so often. It's not going to be something that you can be rid of in a day. You'll have good and bad days. Although difficult, this is not impossible.

There are ways you can set up reminders around your home, or wherever you spend your time, to make this process a bit easier. If you know you carry too many bags of groceries at once, put a note card in your vehicle where you will see it. All that matters is that you start to implement change and do what you can to achieve your goals.

Talking to a Chiropractor About Good Habits

Chiropractors aren't limited to helping you once you're facing a problem. You're more than welcome to ask them questions just like you would with your general practitioner. If you're worried about a certain activity, just ask. Ask for advice, ask for tips. That's what they're there for.

Having a good relationship with all of the doctors you see is very important. Although you may not see your general practitioner as much as your dentist, doesn't mean that it shouldn't exist. Starting good habits should start with you gathering proper information. Advice about your back should come from your chiropractor.
