3 Reasons to Frequently Change Your Workout
By Genevieve Cunningham
When it comes to exercise, we often get comfortable with what we’re already doing. We do the same old routine for the same old amount of time in the same old way. And while any exercise is better than none at all, doing the same old thing day in and day out may not be the best approach. If you’ve gotten a little too comfortable in your workout routine, take a look at these three reasons to change it up often.
To Keep the Boredom Away
Let’s face it, we need change in order to keep the boredom at bay. Most of us like routine, but we also like a little change now and again. Doing the same thing over and over again can create a boredom problem in our minds. We’ll start to get bored, and then we’ll move on to complacency, and before you know it, we’re barely getting in any exercise at all. But frequently changing up your exercise helps challenge the mind and keep things interesting. If you’re a fan of changing up your life, starting with your workout is as good of a place to start as any.
To Challenge the Muscles
Just as the mind gets bored with the same old routine, the muscles can also become a bit too accustomed. Doing the same exercise routine means working the same muscles. It means never challenging a new group of muscles in the body. It means your muscles will get used to the process, and as a result, you may see far fewer results. Changing your exercise program regularly challenges new muscles, and keeps your body guessing as to what is coming next. It’s great for muscle confusion, and it might render bigger results than sticking with the same thing over and over again.
To Make It Fun
Exercise should be fun. It should be challenging and it should be work, but it should also bring your life a little bit of joy. You should like it … at least a little bit. Or at the very least, you should like what it’s doing to your body. But if you’re forcing yourself to do the same thing every day, there’s a much higher likelihood of your workout being more tedious than fun. And who wants that? No one! Change up your routine in order to have a little fun staying fit. Try something new. Join a class. Do something out of the box. The more fun you have, the more likely you are to stick with it for the long run.
There’s no reason that you have to settle on one workout and do it for the rest of your life. If you like it, keep it in the rotation, but don’t be afraid to change it up. In fact, change it up on purpose! With a little variety, you can add some spice to your exercise routine, and a little spice to life all at the same time.
