A Year of Fitness Resolutions

By Brandi Goodman

Lots of generic resolutions get made in the new year. I'll lose weight. I'll work out more. I'll strive to be healthier. Making more specific goals can help. Don't just say you'll lose weight or be healthy. Vow to create a full year of fitness resolutions that can help you meet your goals and make your mind and body strong.

I Will Keep a Fitness Journal

Saying you'll do something doesn't necessarily mean you will. Write it down, however, and you have a much better chance of sticking with it. Keep a fitness journal in the new year that can help you record all of your achievements and see how much progress you make week to week. Seeing how much you've improved can be a great motivator when you're struggling down the road.

I Will Add Movement Wherever Possible

Adding a few steps to your day is a great start. Vow to add movement wherever possible so you can get those numbers up even higher. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park your car farther away from the grocery store's entrance. Take a walking break at lunchtime rather than sitting. There are lots of easy ways you can add more movement to your life.

I Will Have Fun When I Exercise

Exercising can sometimes be daunting. You know you need to get the physical activity in, but it just seems so hard and puts you out of breath quickly. Make the decisions to have fun when you exercise. Turn up the music and dance to your favorite song. Work out with a friend. Try some outdoor exercise options instead of being stuck inside. Find something you enjoy and have fun with it so you're more likely to stick with the program.

I Will Add Strength Training to My Routine

Cardio is important for your heart health and getting your body moving. You need to pair it with strength training though if you want to see real results. You should be doing push-ups, using dumbbells, and trying planks if you want to build up your strength and gain muscle.

A year of fitness resolutions can help you turn one-time objectives into real health goals. Exercise is necessary for mental and physical well-being. Make your year all about getting fit and being healthy and set achievable goals to reach your desires.
