Early Warning Signs of Alzheimer's

By Randi Morse

There are a lot of conditions that can cause us problems as we age, but not many are as scary as Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's is a disease that disrupts your brain. It causes a decline in memory and reasoning skills and can completely change your personality. Alzheimer's not only affects the person with it, it also affects their friends and family. The good news is that there are now more treatment options than there have ever been before for Alzheimer's and other types of dementia, and knowing the early warning signs to watch for can help ensure you get treatment early.

Memory Loss

One of the most common Alzheimer's symptoms, memory loss, can be found very early on in the progression of the disease. You may find that you're forgetting information that you've been recently told, or that you are having a difficult time remembering specific events that happened in your life. Some people even ask the same questions over and over, unable to remember that they were already given the answer. It's typical to experience a bit of memory loss as we age, but if you're finding that you're losing your memory regularly, it may be an early warning sign of Alzheimer's.

Problems Solving Problems

When we are given a challenge, for example having to open a stubborn bottle, we figure out different solutions to help us solve the problem. Struggling to solve problems that you never had an issue with previously is another early warning sign of dementia and Alzheimer's. You may even find that you have a difficult time dealing with your household finances or following the directions on a recipe card.

Disappearing Things

Another common early symptom of Alzheimer's is losing things. A person with the disease may take a set of keys and place them in an unusual location, completely forgetting that they put the keys in a different spot than normal. While it's normal to misplace things every once in awhile, a person who is constantly having a difficult time finding items may be experiencing the early symptoms of Alzheimer's.

Social Withdrawal

A person who is struggling with Alzheimer's often finds that they have a difficult time continuing a conversation, even if it's with a close friend or family member. Because of this they may find themselves withdrawing from social activities, which can be a big warning sign for those close to the person.

If you feel that you're experiencing some of the early warning signs of Alzheimer's, it is a good idea to speak with your physician about your concerns. The earlier you get diagnosed, the more treatment options available.
