Finding Frozen Food That Benefits Your Health

Frozen food has a lot of negativity surrounding it. Many believe you should never eat frozen food and should always choose fresh. However, sometimes frozen is the only option. Maybe it's all you can afford. Maybe it's all that's available at the store that day. Either way, you can find frozen food that still benefits your health as long as you're making the right choices.

Look for Lean Options

Check the packaging for words such as lean, all natural, fat-free, low calories, whole grains, and protein. These are the kinds of frozen meals that are healthier to eat. Don't grab that one dollar or less frozen TV dinner meal unless you have to. It's high in sodium and calories. Lean Cuisine, Weight Watchers Smart Ones, Kashi, and Healthy Choice are some of the brands that provide lean options. You should check the nutrition labels to get all the facts as well. Find meals low in sodium and calories and high in vitamins, protein, and fiber.

Get Fruit and Veggies Without the Sauce

Lots of frozen fruit and vegetable options fill the cooler shelves. You might want to grab that cheesy broccoli package or container of glazed apples. These often have far more sugar, fat, and calories than needed in a single serving. Find frozen fruits and veggies that are plain without any added sauce. You can add your own seasoning or homemade sauce later to make it healthier and cut down on calories and sodium.

Avoid Breaded Meat

Chicken nuggets are a popular frozen food item. You really shouldn't be eating these often, though. It's best to avoid breaded meat because it has far too many carbohydrates, is high in sodium, and provides more calories than you need in one meal. Look for skinless options and choices that are not fried or breaded. Breaded veggies, such as onion rings and fried mushrooms should be off the grocery list as well unless you intend to make them from scratch.

Find Organic Options

Many fruits and vegetables are grown with pesticides. Animals are raised on hormones. Avoid the regular food options that contain harmful chemicals and find organic options instead. They don't use the same fertilizers and synthetic materials and are therefore safer to eat.

Frozen food isn't all bad. There's plenty of healthy choices that can provide the nutrition and calories you need. Don't skip over frozen options all the time. It shouldn't be your daily diet but it's fine to consume on occasion. Fresh or frozen, it's still all about the choices you're making.
