Start Your Day Better

By Paul Rothbart

Mornings can be brutal. It seems like no matter what time you get up, it's too early. A couple of presses on the snooze bar, drag yourself out of bed for the desperately needed mug of coffee. There's a whole day of tasks ahead of you and you can barely get started. This is a common scenario. It's frustrating but it doesn't have to be like this. Here are some things you can do to help get the day started better and allow you to power through those tasks.

Make Your Alarm Clock Effective

The buzz, ring, or generic little melody of most alarm clocks is not very inspiring. Instead, wake up to your favorite music. A song that inspires. It doesn't have to be up-tempo. Ease into the day with a fun tune that puts you in a good mood. Don't use a snooze alarm. Those little 10-minute naps are not helpful and in fact make it more difficult to get out of bed. Set your alarm for the time you need to be up balanced with getting a sufficient amount of sleep.

Don't Get Right Out of Bed

Just because you're awake, doesn't mean you have to get up. If you set your alarm 5-10 minutes early, you can lie in bed and allow yourself to fully awaken. Stretch, do breathing exercises, mediate. Listen to your wake up music. Instead of jumping right out of bed, sit for a few minutes first. Let your blood flow increase and your body and brain wake up. When you feel ready, get out of bed prepared to meet the day.

Shower

While many people do shower in the morning, perhaps you are one who does so at night before bed. A morning shower is a great way to get yourself fully awake. Run cool water for at least the last part of your shower. It will encourage blood flow and stimulate your skin. You feel clean, refreshed, and ready to go.

Use a Fun Coffee Mug

A coffee mug may not seem like something that can make a difference, but it definitely can. Pick a mug with a picture you like, maybe a photo of a favorite vacation spot or a loved one. A mug with a funny or inspirational quote can also work. It's all up to you. Pick yourself up before that first sip.

The start of a new day can be a struggle just to get out of bed and reach the coffee machine. It can make for a very difficult day. By following these tips, you can wake up and get off to a much better start.
