How to Flu Proof Your Home This Season

By Genevieve Cunningham

The fall season is rolling in and people everywhere are getting excited about big sweaters, cool nights, and the approaching holidays. Everyone loves this time of year! But while the fall brings in some fun and excitement, it also brings in some sickness. This is the time of year when people begin to suffer from random colds and the flu. Even though you can’t completely avoid germs, there may be a few things that you can do to improve your chances of staying well. Take a look at these tips for flu proofing your home before the cool winds blow in for good.

Wipe It Down

When flu season comes around, it's so important to wipe everything down. Wipe down the counters, the table tops, the door knobs, and handles. When your kids come home, make them wipe down backpacks, lunch boxes, and anything that may have picked up germs along the way. Make sure that you use an antibacterial wipe in order to kill the germs and keep the sickness away from your home. Making this a practice every day, multiple times a day is one of the best ways to prevent the flu and colds in your family.

Seal Up the Drafts

Fall winds mean drafts and cool breezes. While it’s normal to feel that chill in the air, you probably don’t want that chill in your house. In order to help prevent illness, seal up any drafts or open spots in your home. Look near windows and doors, or near any cracks near the baseboards. While drafts, all by themselves, won’t cause illness, they can exacerbate a cold and make a minor illness much worse.

Get the Kitchen Cooking

The food that we eat can actually be quite healing to our bodies … if we’re willing to eat well. If you want to work toward illness prevention, make sure that you’re using chicken stock, garlic, onion, and peppers. These foods are thought to boost the immune system and protect your body from illness and germs every single day. Is it foolproof? No, you’ll probably still get sick at some point. But it definitely helps to strengthen your immunities and keep you healthier far more often.

It’s impossible to avoid all illness for the rest of your life, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t take precautions. Protect your home and your family by using these tips every day. With some diligence and a little luck, you may be able to skip the flu this year in lieu of a healthy and happy fall season.
