Manage Your Stress Before it Manages You

By Donna Stark

It often seems like there is not a whole lot you can do about stress. Your child will always test the limit, those bills will continue to pop up in your mailbox, and your workday will never have enough hours in it for you to get everything done. Stress can put your entire well-being in jeopardy and unfortunately, it really is never-ending, isn't it? But there are some ways you can manage the stress you face every day without letting it try to manage you. It's time to bring stress to its knees.

How You Can Manage Stress

Stress management is one of the most important skills you can learn, not only for your mental and emotional well-being but your physical health as well. Fortunately, some of the ways that you can reduce your stress are easy and simple to add to your life, so no matter how many times you want to pull your hair out in a day, it isn't too difficult to incorporate. Take a look.

  • Get your sweat on - Exercise has been shown to be a natural stress-reducer and a great tool in the management of both stress and anxiety. It increases your endorphin levels, reduces adrenaline, improves your mood, and helps you focus and think clearly. On top of that, it's great for your physical health too!
  • Get your rest - Our days are long but our list of responsibilities and demands is even longer. So what do we typically do? We sacrifice our sleep. And as much as we think we are doing ourselves a favor by working until we drop, we aren't. Inadequate amounts of sleep on a regular basis can wreak havoc on your physical, mental, and emotional health. It can increase the amount of stress and anxiety you feel and can diminish your overall wellness. Be sure to establish a set sleeping schedule and keep sleep on the top of your priority list!
  • Get your friends - There is nothing better or more calming than spending some time with those who have your back. Connecting with friends and loved ones is a great way to counteract the effects of stress in your life, so make it a point to get together regularly. Or, you can join a club or volunteer as well!

Getting Back to Your Life

Effectively managing your day-to-day stress is critical to your overall health and well-being, so take the time to learn these important tools. In doing so, you will be able to break the hold that stress has on your days and live a more peaceful and healthier life from this point forward.
