Smart Choices for a Healthy Season
By Donna Stark
Many of us will blame the state of our health in the upcoming months on the cold and flu season, but maybe that's not the direction we should take. Maybe we should also blame the state of our health on all the holiday indulgences we partake in, the excess stress we are under, the lack of sunlight we are exposed to, and the amount of exercise we should be engaging in, but aren't. Maybe, just maybe, this season of sickness heading our way should instead be called a season of really bad choices. Luckily though, we can get through it with just a few simple changes to our daily routines. Check them out below.
Smart Indulgences
This season is full of decadent treats, but that doesn't mean you need to fill your plate with all of them! What you should do is fill your plates with healthier options instead. Here are some suggestions.
- Raw vegetables with hummus over wings, chips, and dip
- Whole vegetables over creamy casseroles
- Flavored water spritzers over soda and alcohol
- Sliced fruit over brownies and cookies
Reduced Stress Levels
Gift-giving, traveling, decorating ... there are a lot of reasons why the holiday season is filled with stress, but there are also a lot of things you can do to make your days easier. If you are starting to feel overwhelmed, self-care is the way to go. Take a break from it all by engaging in a hobby, taking a bath, or reading the book that's been sitting on your nightstand.
Sunlight and Vitamin D
The days are getting shorter so you may need to start planning on when you are going to get your daily dose of sunlight! Spending time with Mother Nature is a great way to fill up on Vitamin D, reduce your stress, and get your body moving, so head outside for a quick walk or hit your local farmers market.
Daily Exercise
It's important to remain as physically active as you can during the colder months because excessive sitting can lead to joint pain and an increased risk of significant health conditions. Try to incorporate an extra stretch session in the morning and then another 30 minutes of movement throughout the day. It really will make a difference in how you feel.
Healthy Season Ahead
Are you excited for a healthy season ahead? With some simple changes to your normal routines, you can look forward to love, joy, and optimal health and wellness for everyone in the upcoming months!
