Are You Protecting Your Back Or Pushing It Too Far?

By Sandy Schroeder

When you ask most people how they treat their backs, they usually say fine, but that may be an illusion. Every day, as you work at your desk, drive, sleep, tote groceries, lift toddlers, or vacuum, you may be pushing your back to the limit without knowing it.

If all of your daily habits are done with an awareness of what it takes to protect your back, life may be good. If not, a painful back could be the next stop, according to Harvard Health.

Try these four “back-friendly” habits.

Tote less – Streamline your daily load in purses, briefcases, and fashion bags. Carry only what you need and distribute the load, alternating shoulders or using two smaller bags.

Opt for a good seat – Considering how much time is spent at the office, your chair should have an adjustable backrest, armrests, lumbar support, and wheels. Knees should be slightly elevated with a distance of about three fingers between the back of the leg and the chair. Feet should be flat on the floor. Arrange your work surface so everything is within easy reach, no twisting needed.

Drive smart – Sit close to the wheel and create good lumbar back support with a cushion or rolled towel. Use adjustable seating to get a custom fit. Consider using a foam seat cushion to muffle vibration. Take frequent breaks to walk and stretch during long drives.

Sleep well – Keep the body totally aligned. If it works for you, sleep on your side with your knees bent and pulled up slightly. Choose a pillow filled with down, or a similar material, that lets your head sink into the pillow, keeping your head even with your spine. An additional pillow placed between the legs may help to relieve pressure on the spine. Mattresses should have no lumps and provide medium firm support. If you are buying a new one, keep looking until you find the one that fits you.
