5 Simple Ways People Stay in Great Shape

By Sandy Schroeder

Many of us have friends who just seem to stay in shape with very little effort. Fortunately, they are often great people, so we let it slide.

Recently 12minuteAthlete.com looked at the issue and came up with some simple ways that really fit people stay in shape. These people have assembled a group of habits that keeps them fit with less effort, which can make all of the difference. Here’s how they do it.

Exercise Is Actually Fun

Workouts that you dread are not going to be around forever. Pause to think of exercises, sports or other activities that you really enjoy. Everybody is different, but we all know when something works. Dancing, volleyball, running, shooting hoops, yoga, golf, tennis, jogging, hiking and biking are just a few of the countless choices out there. Keep looking and try different mixes that are fun for you.

Diets Just Never Come Up

Most of the fit people that I know never seem to diet. They pay attention to what works for them, selecting a healthy diet from  favorite foods that energize them. Start with fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, poultry and fish, healthy oils such as olive oil, nuts and seeds. Pick and choose the ones that appeal to you. Keep lots of healthy choices on hand and look for healthy recipes to share with your family and friends. Skip highly processed foods, fast food and takeout. With this approach diets may never be needed.

Health and Fitness Is a Priority

Many of us weave our exercise routines through our schedule, hoping to make them happen as often as possible. Really fit people make exercise a priority and give it a permanent spot on their schedule. To make a workout commitment stick, choose the most likely spot for it. You know you have the right spot when it feels as natural as brushing your teeth.

Sleep is Essential

People who stay in shape know they need 7 to 9 hours every night to generate the energy to work out daily. Sleep helps repair muscles, boost performance and regulate metabolism. Sleep, exercise and a healthy diet all complement each other.

Eating Exceptions Work Too

People who enjoy healthy diets usually give themselves a little room to cheat too. That slice of pie or brownie now and then helps one avoid all out binges. Pick and choose your treats to retain your sanity and eat healthy the rest of the time.
