4 Tips to Get Your Family Active This Fall
By Brandi Goodman
Staying active throughout the summer months is typically easy to achieve. Your family may spend lots of days swimming, biking, and playing outside. In the fall, however, physical activity starts to wane. Your family might replace outdoor time with TV time when fall shows return. Keep some tips in mind so you can get your family active this fall and maintain a necessary exercise routine.
Combine Park Time and Trail Walking
Lots of parks offer a playground in one area and walking trails in another. Take advantage and really get your exercise in for the day by doing both. Combine park time and trail walking so your entire family can burn plenty of calories and stay active for a while when you're out. A walk through the beauty of nature can be great for the soul anyways, and an easy walk on a short trail works well for even young children.
Ask Your Kids What They Want to Do
If you're having trouble getting your kids to exercise, take the time to ask what they want to do. Getting to choose a fun activity they actually enjoy can help them stay fit while having fun. Maybe they want to go for a family bike ride. Perhaps they'd rather go out to the yard and play catch. Instead of forcing them to do an activity you choose, asking them for their favorites may prove more beneficial -- and receive less resistance.
Find an Indoor Pool
Beaches and outdoor pools are readily available throughout the summer. The rain and cold weather that starts to settle in for fall can deter people from swimming outside. If your kiddos enjoy swimming and want to continue this activity throughout the fall and even winter, then finding an indoor pool option would be helpful. Plenty of gyms, recreational facilities, and even hotels offer pools that you can pay a fee to swim in.
Make a Leaf Pile for Jumping
Jumping in leaves can provide hours of fun for kids. You have to spend time raking anyway when the leaves drift down, so why not make it a fun activity for the whole family by getting everyone outside raking and jumping. You can all rake up the yard together, making for a quick chore, and then take turns jumping into the pile. It's a gleeful autumn tradition.
No matter what you choose to do, the point is to get it done. Make sure your entire family is participating in physical activity this fall so you can all stay healthy and well. Exercise is necessary for both physical and mental health, so engaging in plenty of it is key for your well-being, no matter the season.
