Dr. Shelby Kemp joined The Joint Chiropractic family of local healthcare providers in 2020 with her arrival at the Sugar Hill clinic location. A graduate of Southern Illinois University who got her bachelor's of science degree in biomedical science, she went on to earn her doctorate of chiropractic from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Port Orange, Fla.
“The thing I love most about being in the chiropractic field is seeing my patients’ quality of life improve after adjustments,” she says. “It’s gratifying being able to talk and interact with my patients and develop a relationship with them.”
A native of southern Illinois, Dr. Kemp worked in Lawrenceville prior to working in Sugar Hill. She spends time with her two dogs, Lucy and Jax, and her cockatiel Reggie. When she’s not working or walking the dogs, she enjoys hiking and going to the beach.
She knew chiropractic was her calling based on her personal experience. “I had horrible back pain in college, so bad that I was unable to drive,” she says. “I did not want to go to a doctor where they would just give me medication to cover up the pain. I decided to try a chiropractor. I left after the first visit and felt immediate relief. I continued to go and kept feeling better after each visit, and I knew I wanted to help others feel this relief!”
In Case You Didn’t Know
Dr. Kemp says the one thing she always keeps in her refrigerator is spicy mayo for the sushi she loves so much.
If she could bring together four people from history for a dream dinner party, Dr. Kemp would sit down “with Robin Williams for his sense of humor to keep the conversation light and happy; Gordon Ramsay, who will be cooking; escape artist Harry Houdini to provide the entertainment; and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to pay for it.”
Dr. Kemp loves to travel, and a solo trip to Ireland was one of the most amazing experiences of her life, she says. “The scenery is stunning and the castles were absolutely beautiful.”
Dr. Jeremy Martin became part of The Joint Chiropractic’s team of local healthcare providers in 2020 when he began serving residents in the Buford area to continue doing the work he finds so gratifying.
“The thing that’s best about being in the chiropractic field is helping patients reach their full potential,” he says. “I love helping children and adults avoid dangerous medications and surgery.”
Dr. Martin is a product of Lawrenceville, and has worked previously there and in Duluth, Alpharetta, and Decatur.
He received his doctorate in chiropractic at Life University and a bachelor’s degree in general studies from Excelsior College.
He knew chiropractic could be his calling when he was a teenager. “I was a junior in high school and had a knee injury that doctors told me required surgery,” he says. “A friend of mine introduced me to chiropractic, and after seeing him, the knee got better and the surgery was not needed. I met Dr. Sid Williams through a family friend and, after speaking with him at Life University, I was sold on becoming a chiropractor.”
He is happy to be serving Buford. “I’m excited to be part of a team that helps serve our community in such a powerful way,” he says.
In Case You Didn’t Know
Dr. Martin says he always keeps protein drinks in his refrigerator: “I enjoy working out and it fuels my body properly.”
If he could bring together any four people from history for the dinner party of his dreams, he would bring together Jesus, President Abraham Lincoln, reggae icon Bob Marley, and entertainer Robin Williams. “I’d like to see what Lincoln did with the stress of holding a country together amidst turmoil,” he says. “I’d love to hear Marley sing in person, and Robin Williams tell some jokes. And who wouldn’t want to talk to Jesus?”
He says he loves being a parent and the best thing he has ever done was raise his two children. But the other coolest thing on his life’s resume, he says, is “I wrote and published two books, one on chronic pain and the other on ADHD.”
