Are Healthy Living Fears Holding You Back?
By Sara Butler
Change is sometimes scary, especially when it comes to your health and wellness. But there comes a time in a lot of people's lives where they have to start making a bigger commitment to healthy living. It may seem silly to fear healthy living, but there are a lot of reasons people may be frightened, which only serves to hold them back. Here are a few healthy lifestyle fears you may have and how to overcome them.
People Will Laugh at You
OK, so you're not in third grade anymore, but even for adults, the idea of being laughed at or ridiculed in public is a very real fear. When you throw working out at the gym into the mix, then that can make things even worse.
If you've not worked out in a while, going to the gym can be daunting, but rest assured that many people are so focused during their workouts, they'll hardly notice you. It's important to remember that your fears are coming from inside your head, not from the outside world. So, keep going to the gym and you'll boost your confidence as you feel better physically through exercise.
You Don't Know What You're Doing
If you've never worked out before, starting is often the hardest part. Fitness experts often advise you begin with something you enjoy -- but what if you don't know what that is?
To find the right exercise for you, look at your health and fitness goals and then try to find a workout that will help you achieve them. For example, if you want to strength train to build muscles, try working with a personal trainer to show you the ropes. If you want to reach and maintain a healthy weight, then start walking or taking a step aerobics class. Just don't push too hard, too fast, or you could fizzle out.
You're Afraid Healthy Food Doesn't Taste Good
This is a legit fear since many people get bored of eating the same things every day. Plus, it can seem next to impossible to give up the comfort food you've loved your whole life. Well, here's a little secret: You don't have to give up your favorite foods. Eating healthy is all about moderation. You don't have to abandon foods you like and eat lettuce and tofu all day to be healthy.
Start out slow with a few food swaps such as green tea instead of a soda pop, or blueberries instead of a cookie. Make an effort to eat unprocessed whole foods and every once in a while, have something you really want -- just have a reasonable portion of it!
Healthy living is something you have to work at, but try to recognize the fears that may be holding you back from it!
