Walking Workout: Rain or Shine

By Sara Butler

Walking is a great way to get exercise. It's easy, it doesn't require special equipment, and you can literally do it almost anywhere. Another great thing about walking? It can be done rain or shine.

Yes, that's right, you shouldn't let the rain deter you from getting your walking workout in. You simply need to plan ahead to face the rain. Here are a few tips to help you get your walking workout in whether the sun is shining or it's raining cats and dogs.

Do You Need an Umbrella?

Most people think if you're going to walk in the rain, then an umbrella is the way to go. While umbrellas are great to help you get from place to place when it's raining, they're not very practical if it's really windy or if you're walking for a workout. You need those arms, after all!

The best way to shield yourself from rain during a walking workout is with a poncho or a raincoat. If you exercise outdoors a lot, then it's not a bad idea to invest in a raincoat anyway. Plus, they come in a variety of weights to help you better stay cool. So, you can get heavy-duty raincoats for when it's cold and rainy or a light raincoat to help you weather a summer storm. Just make sure whatever you choose that it's breathable to help balance your rising temperature as you work out. Hoods are also a good idea to help you keep your head dry and it's easy to take off in case you feel too hot.

Disposable ponchos are a good thing to have on hand too so you can stuff one in your pocket or fanny pack for your walk just in case it starts to rain.

Plan Your Route

The right route can make all the difference in your walk. That's why when it's wet or raining you should make sure to avoid certain areas for your safety. This means that you should avoid busy streets, any areas that tend to collect water, summits that could be covered by clouds, or dirt trails that can get extra muddy.

Choose routes that are quiet through neighborhoods when it's rainy or at your local park. They're safer and more predictable spots. And be prepared to adjust plans if necessary. When the weather is bad, flexibility is key!

Walking is a great workout. Make sure it's something you can stick to rain or shine!
