Improve Your Life by Breaking These Habits
By Paul Rothbart
If you want to make something a regular part of your life, ingrain it as a habit. This is very helpful for a healthy lifestyle. You can make habits out of eating well, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly. Then there are the bad habits, the ones that can cause problems and have a negative impact on your life. Most people have at least one or two of these. By making the effort to break these habits, you can make a significant improvement in your life. Here are some things to stop doing.
Multitasking
Many people multitask or at least try to. It seems like a logical way to get more done in less time. But research has found that only about two percent of the total population has the ability to multitask efficiently. The rest are just dividing focus, overloading their minds, and doing things less than optimally. Stop trying to multitask. If you make a list and prioritize, you can complete one task at a time and get a lot accomplished. You will also be far less likely to make mistakes and have to do something over. It will also relieve you of considerable stress.
Trying to be Perfect
I am often guilty of trying to be perfect myself. It's a foolish goal. Perfection doesn't exist and different people have different perspectives on what perfect is. Attempting to be perfect in everything can lead to fear of failure which is a prime cause of procrastination. Always do your best. But forget about perfect. Others very often don't see the perceived flaws in your work.
Always Saying Yes
If you're at all like me, you hate to turn down a friend or family member when asked for a favor or extended an invitation. It seems rude. But most of us already have a full load on a daily basis. We just don't have the time to say yes to everything that comes our way. Think about your own schedule and to-do list. If the invite can fit in, sure, say yes. But you can very politely turn someone down to avoid a time suck that will interfere with your own projects. Explain why. People can be more understanding than you think.
Making a positive practice a habit is a great idea. Bad habits on the other hand are bad for a reason. They can take away precious time, cause undue stress, and be harmful to our health and happiness. Break yourself of these habits and watch how your life improves.
