If a Toddler Can Find Ways to Move, So Can You!

By Donna Stark

I work with young children and I am constantly entertained by watching them learn how to move. It always brings a smile to my face when I witness those awkward moments of transition, when they are trying so hard to go from one stage of development to the next. I mean, who wouldn’t smile watching them try their hardest to roll over for the first time, learn how to stand, or after all of their balance issues have been worked out, taking those first few steps to freedom? The human body is designed to move, and for me, it is so neat to see someone so small struggle and persevere to do so.

Moving Your Body

Nowadays, the average person spends the majority of their days sitting, and there really couldn’t be anything worse. Studies have shown that sitting for extended amounts of time can wreak havoc on the body, but not only that, the more you sit, the more tired you become! So channel your inner child and find your love for movement today! Here are some tips.

  • Figure out what you like to do - It could be an early morning run, a hike in the woods, an invigorating surf, or a peaceful yoga class, but whatever it is, just get out and do it! And to keep your motivation going, switch it up during the week or find a partner to train with so you don’t get bored. It’s a great way to set yourself up for success!
  • Motivate yourself - Need some more reasons to add exercise to your daily routine? Well, look no further than great health! Exercise stimulates positive emotions, improves memory, reduces the risk of illness and disease, prevents injuries, increases bone and muscle strength, and promotes better sleep.
  • Add enough - The recommended amount of exercise for a healthy adult is either 150 minutes per week of moderate intensity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise. In addition to that, it is also recommended that you strength train twice a week. So, for the amount of time it takes to watch a couple of television shows, you can most certainly keep your body on the path to optimal health and fitness instead!

Doing What Works

Who knows … maybe you are the type of person that will do whatever it takes to burn those calories, but if you are like me, you may find it hard to work out if you really dislike the exercise. It’s important to find some level of enjoyment with your fitness routine so that you are more inclined to stick with it. There is no rule that your sweat sessions can’t be fun, and perhaps once you get started, you may discover new exercises that you like too!
